The dream of Cameron Argetsinger to bring European style competition to the village of Watkins Glen became a reality on October 2, 1948. "The Day They Stopped the Trains," was the first post-World War II road race in the U.S. After 5 years of street racing, the event was moved to the Town of Dix in 1953 until a 2.3-mile permanent circuit was built in 1956. The Formula 1 visited The Glen in 1961 for the first Watkins Glen U.S. Grand Prix, won by Innes Ireland, and would be a fall tradition at the circuit through 1980. Great drivers such as Clark, Hill, Stewart, Cevert, Peterson, Villenueve, Lauda, Fittipaldi and Hunt are among the winners of these Grand Prix. The circuit was expanded in 1971 to 3.377 miles and hosted a wide variety of competition including the Can-Am, Trans-Am, Six Hours, Formula 5000, CART, Indy Car, Atlantics and NASCAR. Top drivers of international motor sports Mark Donohue, Mario Andretti, Jody Scheckter, Paul Newman, Bruce McLaren and many more also raced at this circuit. | ||||
