Watkins Glen International
The dream of Cameron Argetsinger to bring European style competition to
the village of Watkins Glen became a reality on October 2, 1948.
"The Day They Stopped the Trains," was the first post-World War II road race
in the U.S. After 5 years of street racing, the event was moved to the
Town of Dix in 1953 until a 2.3-mile permanent circuit was built in 1956.
The Formula 1 visited The Glen in 1961 for the first Watkins Glen
U.S. Grand Prix, won by Innes Ireland, and would be a fall tradition at the
circuit through 1980. Great drivers such as Clark, Hill, Stewart, Cevert,
Peterson, Villenueve, Lauda, Fittipaldi and Hunt are among the winners of
these Grand Prix. The circuit was expanded in 1971 to 3.377 miles and hosted
a wide variety of competition including the Can-Am, Trans-Am, Six Hours,
Formula 5000, CART, Indy Car, Atlantics and NASCAR. Top drivers of
international motor sports Mark Donohue, Mario Andretti, Jody Scheckter,
Paul Newman, Bruce McLaren and many more also raced at this circuit.
One Lap of America
Yes Virgina, There Really Was a Cannonball Run!
In the early 1970's Brock Yates, then senior editor of Car & Driver Magazine

In 1992 Brock put the Cannonball One Lap of America on the format used
today, some 5000 miles of race tracks and interstates in 9 days throughout
the country. No support crews, street tires, time trial event scoring and
with the finest meals available at gas stations and convenience stores.
Amateur and seasoned professional drivers like Parnelli Jones, Price Cobb,
John Buffum, Elliot Forbes Robinson, Hurley Haywood, Dan Gurney,
Brock Yates and David Murry have taken on this annual challenge.
